Book's title: The Dark
Author: Lemony Snicket
Illustrated: Jon Klassen
Summary
Kind of Modern Fantasy
The book is unlikely worlds or maybe possible to experience the happening. What the dark communicated with the boy is impossible, but I wonder that the dark mays ghost or spirit. I am still considering about the end of story has the result, too. Thus, someone can make a fantasy from the book. The dark may want to do important something for him, which is not scary story.
Six Elements of Social Justice Curriculum
According to the Six Elements of Social Justice Curriculum Design for Elementary Education, self-love and knowledge strongly related the book. Some children scare the dark because they cannot see everything or feel alone, including me, too. But the book help to make a new imaging or idea about the dark as character.
In the class, children can enjoy to play in the dark or different new story by the book. Also, children can consider meaning why the dark talk the boy. I want to suggest the book to read if child scare the dark.

I too am scared of the dark (still!) and I wish I would have been read this book when I was a young girl! I think your comment about using this in order to discuss being afraid of the dark, or even making it more broad to talk about how being afraid of things are okay would be a good discussion to have in class with your students and then even ways/tips of how to overcome some fears!
ReplyDeleteAhhh! I love this book so much!! I 100% agree with you that you can interpret the dark to be many different things: ghosts, spirit, animate void, something else entirely. I think it's great to leave it open, so readers can create their own ideas. To go along with your classroom suggestion, it would be interesting to have students write the same story from the point of view of the dark. Why did it start talking to boy? What does the dark want? etc.
ReplyDeleteLemony Snicket is a good author. The fantasy shows how the dark is speaking with the boy - although the dark can not talk to the boy. For classroom activities, I like how you presented the idea about children being scared of the dark. Maybe you can discuss about fears and how knowledge can improve their fear of the dark.
