I love Shel Siverstein poems! I am curious for the poems that are more visually represented like the one about the lazy lazy thirsty girl laying on the ground waiting for it to rain so she can drink (forget the name of this poem), how could it be translated into ASL for younger students to still show the movement of the words in the poem. These poems are great for kids to learn that poems do not have to follow the strict rules of poetry, but they can play with the words and how they are placed on the page.
I seriously love this book. SO MANY POEMS! I remember reading poems from this book at school and at home - so many different themes and styles. I think that was a great point that you brought up about picking a few short poems to read aloud to your students in order to show the differences in styles and types of poems - I did a poetry lesson during my first practicum and I used the reverse order of what you commented by teaching them the criteria of what different styles of poems are and then reading some together. I think I may have lost a few of my students because I didn't initially draw them in so I think engaging students in read alouds with poems first and then analyzing them, including different themes, is a great way to incorporate two big topics of different styles of poetry and different themes into one huge lesson.
